I had the most beautiful evening in the Columbia River Gorge with two sweet friends, Sydney & Michael capturing their engagement photos. Michael asked Sydney to marry him just a few weeks ago in California! Congratulations to them!
They are starting to plan their fall wedding in Hawaii and I couldn’t be more excited for them. When Michael reached out a few months ago to document their engagement so many locations came to mind. When you live in Oregon, the options truly are endless. Whether you want to go to the coast, mountains, waterfall, desert or simply just your backyard – the options are endless.
I thought the Columbia River Gorge would be so suiting for these two. Since they both grew up right outside of Portland, I knew they were familiar with the Gorge.
Latourell Falls is such a breathtaking spot to take any couple! In fact, it’s one of the first places I ever took photos in the PNW, back in February 2018. I had seen this location on the internet and knew I had to visit. Latourell Falls is the closest of the major Columbia River Gorge waterfalls to Portland. A tall single-plunge waterfall of 224 feet, it spills over the lip of an undercut amphitheater of tall pillars of columnar basalt. An eye-catching splash of chartreuse-colored golden cobblestone lichen adorns the upper amphitheater. It contrasts with the dark basalt walls. You can view these lower falls from a point just above the trailhead, but the loop hike here takes you up Latourell Creek to see two-tiered Upper Latourell Falls before winding down to the state park picnic area below the highway.
The light at the falls for their session was so contrasty and moody which made for some fun experimental images. It’s safe to say I am thoroughly obsessed with how these turned out.
After finishing up their first location, we drove into the Gorge a little bit further to shoot at Rowena crest for sunset. Rowena Crest is a stunning viewpoint and trailhead along the Columbia River Highway that looks down on Mayer State Park and the Columbia River Gorge. The view includes the iconic Rowena Loops — the horseshoe curves that wind up to the viewpoint, a true engineering marvel.
We enjoyed the most beautiful sunset as the sky turned pink and frolicked through the wildflowers while they lasted! It was such an honor to document Sydney and Michaels engagement session and I am wishing them a lifetime of happiness!
I would love to document your special engagement, wedding or elopement! Reach out and see if your date is still available!
